چکیده

First reported in 2003, mosaic tetracycline resistance genes are a subgroup of the genes encoding ribosomal protection proteins (RPPs). They are formed when two or more RPP-encoding genes recombine resulting in a functional chimera. To date, the majority of mosaic genes are derived from sections of three RPP genes, tet(O), tet(W) and tet(32), with others comprising tet(M) and tet(S). In this first review of mosaic genes, we report on their structure, diversity and prevalence, and suggest that these genes may be responsible for an under-reported contribution to tetracycline resistance in bacteria.

Tetracycline resistance mediated by ribosomal protection.

Resistance to tetracycline may be mediated by one of three different mechanisms: (i) an energy-dependent efflux of tetracycline brought about by an integral membrane protein (20); (ii) ribosomal protection by a soluble protein (5, 23), or (iii) enzymatic inactivation of tetracycline (33), which occurs rarely. This minireview concentrates exclusively on the second mechanism of tetracycline resis...

Host mutations (miaA and rpsL) reduce tetracycline resistance mediated by Tet(O) and Tet(M).

The effects of mutations in host genes on tetracycline resistance mediated by the Tet(O) and Tet(M) ribosomal protection proteins, which originated in Campylobacter spp. and Streptococcus spp., respectively, were investigated by using mutants of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli. The miaA, miaB, and miaAB double mutants of S. typhimurium specify enzymes for tRNA modification at the ad...

Presence of specific antibiotic (tet) resistance genes in infant faecal microbiota.

The widespread use of antibiotics for medical and veterinary purposes has led to an increase of microbial resistance. The antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria has been studied extensively. However, antibiotics are not only selective for pathogens: they also affect all members of the gut microbiota. These microorganisms may constitute a reservoir of genes carrying resistance to specific ...

Prevalence of tetracycline resistance genes in oral bacteria.

Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used in humans, animals, and aquaculture; therefore, many bacteria from different ecosystems are exposed to this antibiotic. In order to determine the genetic basis for resistance to tetracycline in bacteria from the oral cavity, saliva and dental plaque samples were obtained from 20 healthy adults who had not taken antibiotics during the previous 3 m...

Effects of thermophilic composting on oxytetracycline, sulfamethazine, and their corresponding resistance genes in swine manure.

Environmental contamination caused by residual antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in concentrated animal feeding operations has drawn increasing attention. This study investigated the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) and sulfamethazine (SMN) as well as the behavior of their corresponding ARGs through a series of simulated composting tests with swine manure. The results indicate ...
